Bam! Family Command Center!

Sharing is caring!

September is here, and all the baggage that comes with it! If you have kids, you know what I mean. I am so excited for the new adventures of all of our lives this school year, with the older two moving up a grade, and with our entire household hopefully benefitting from the huge investment of me pressing pause on my career. With that being said, although the number of items on my personal plate might be less, the number of items on my family’s plate is the same, or I suppose even growing; 3 kids, 3 sets of activities. You know, mo’ money, mo’ problems (what the what?).

To help prepare ourselves for our new September schedule, I’ve finally assembled my very own command center! I have been toying with this for a while, and I am thrilled to have it in my life and in my kitchen for us all to refer to. Essentially, a command center is a central place for important things and reminders.

I had two requirements for my command center: I wanted it to be functional AND aesthetically pleasing. I knew it could look dorm-y real quick. And, I knew the temptation was there to have it bigger or more complex than necessary.

So, I started as I often start: pinteresting. I pinned and pinned and found ideas. Then, I sat down and tried to be as realistic as possible about our needs and limitations (such as physical space).

I knew we needed a place to display a calendar that I could write events on. I love iCal, but I needed something large that would display the whole month and the kids could visualize time with. Plus, I adore my momager binder and wanted to keep using it, but I didn’t love its home on the kitchen counter. However, it couldn’t live in our home office; that wasn’t handy enough. I needed a wall hanging that could hold my momager binder (as opposed to deconstructing it and putting stuff in files).

I decided on the space to put it pretty quickly- the most central part of our home. It’s really the HQ of all things Tallman.

Next, I did some browsing around town. Time is so limited when you have kids, and I really lucked out because I found perfect items in shops #2 & #3, Burlington coat factory and Walmart (ps totally got cute back to school clothes at Burlington!). Target had some nice stuff for this purpose but it wasn’t quite right for me.

What I knew I needed:

  • Calendar
  • Place to put a small amount of paperwork
  • Place to put my momager binder
  • Place to display lunch menu for school
  • Dry erase board
  • Place for pens
  • Decorative items

We hung everything with these, as opposed to nails. Worked great!

I didn’t want a massive dry erase board, but I need something, and this was perfect.

Probably my favorite part of the whole thing. I mean, come on! Look at this happy little can of brand new Sharpies!! giggity giggity πŸ™‚

I had so much fun assembling this thing, and it pleases me just to walk by it! I love that everything has a place, is in one place, and it looks pretty πŸ™‚ Β Do you think you could benefit from a command center? Or, does what you have now work flawlessly for you? I’d love to hear your ideas!

I know mine needs a bit of tweaking. There’s one more item that needs to be hung, off to the right side, and I think I need something pretty to go closer to the ceiling. I’m not sure yet. But it needs a little something. Maybe one of those vases that you can hang off a wall??? That would be neat.

If you’re starting off your school year for either yourself and/or your kids, I hope everything goes smoothly for your family. Remember to simplify as much as you can so you can focus on what matters!
