Writing Experiment: January 1

Sharing is caring!

Why, hello new year! 2018. It sounds so fake. I think that at every new year. And then by the second week of January, I’m pretty well used to it. I was supposed to wake up early and write, but I am coming from you at 10:40am. I slept in to 10:00!!! Well, there were quite a few interruptions around 7:30, but I persevered in ignoring my children and it paid off. I haven’t slept in to 10am in ages, I have no idea when the last time was. Maybe when I was pregnant with my oldest? I don’t know. Before kids. I feel like I’m in a daze actually. I guess I’m out of practice.

Super cold, I think pretty much everywhere in the U.S. One thing I can totally appreciate about the extreme cold is that it’s almost always gorgeously sunny. Clear skies, all the light reflecting off the ice and snow… it really is beautiful.

Hahaha I am hoping this experiment of writing every single day improves… talking about sleep and the weather isn’t really going to get me far.

Well, maybe it will… I am reminded of an episode of Liz Gilbert’s podcast Magic Lessons, where she interviews Brene Brown. They start talking about creativity and how important self-compassion and empathy is, how it’s actually more important to creativity than self-discipline. I believe what they said was, it’s not discipline that gets you to day 2, it’s self-compassion and self-forgiveness. The crap you write on Day 1 is what gets you to write your good stuff.

Speaking of being a writer: it never ceases to crack me up that I write recreationally now. That I actually enjoy it. This is from the (type A) kid that purposely didn’t take AP English in high school, simply to avoid writing essays. But, I guess I am a writer. If I write, I’m a writer. If I blog, I’m a blogger. However, this leads us to the $50,000 question: if I write a blog post and no one reads it, did it really make a sound? 🤔🤔🤔
